Savant vs. Control4 for Santa Barbara Luxury Estates: An Honest Comparison

So when someone asks us whether they should choose Savant or Control4, they’re right to wonder if we’re giving them a fair answer.

We are. Specifically because we chose Savant after working with multiple home automation platforms, and we chose it specifically because of the clients we serve. Namely, homeowners in Santa Barbara, Montecito, Hope Ranch, Ojai, and the Santa Ynez Valley who are building or renovating homes where nothing is approximate.

The short answer

For luxury estates in Santa Barbara County—homes above 4,000 square feet, with multiple zones, high-end finishes, and owners who expect everything to work without managing it—Savant continues to be the better choice.

Control4 is a strong, well-supported platform that makes sense for a lot of homeowners. But it was built for a broader market. Savant was built for fewer homes, done at a higher level, with deeper aesthetic customization and a more refined user experience. In our market, that distinction matters.

What is Savant?

Savant is a luxury home automation platform founded in 2005, headquartered on Cape Cod. It controls lighting, audio, video, climate, shading, security, and energy management through a single interface which you can access via a native app, touchscreen, or physical remote.

Savant is sold exclusively through authorized dealers, which means you can’t buy it at a big-box store and you can’t install it yourself. That exclusivity is a feature, not a limitation. Every Savant system is designed, programmed, and supported by a certified integrator.

What is Control4?

Control4, now part of Snap One, is the largest home automation platform by market share in North America. It controls the same categories as Savant—lighting, audio, AV, climate, access—and it’s also dealer-exclusive.

Control4 has a larger installer network, a broader ecosystem of compatible third-party products, and a wider price range. It’s the platform most residential integrators know, and it performs well in the hands of a skilled installer.

Where Savant and Control4 actually differ

User experience

We truly believe Savant’s interface is better, particularly for those who lean toward Apple products. Their app is cleaner, more intuitive, and easier for non-techy family members and guests to use without a tutorial. The home screen prioritizes rooms and scenes over menus and device lists.

Control4’s interface has improved meaningfully over the past few years, but it still shows its roots as a system built for operators rather than occupants. The logic is there, but the feel is nowhere close, in our opinion.

It has been our experience that for estates where a range of people such as owners, guests, housekeepers, adult children will interact with the system daily, Savant’s easy-to-use and easy-to-understand interface creates fewer support calls.

Physical design

Savant’s keypads, remotes, and touchscreens are designed to belong in a luxury interior. The Savant Remote Pro is one of the best-looking physical controllers in the industry. It reads as an object worth having, not a piece of installed equipment.

Control4 keypads are functional and available in a range of finishes, but they were designed for compatibility, not for a room that was finished by a high-end interior designer. If the details of your home matter like they do for many Santa Barbara homeowners, Savant’s physical products uphold the aesthetic standard.

Lighting control integration

Savant integrates natively and deeply with Lutron Homeworks and RadioRA, which are the two lighting control systems we specify for many of the luxury estates we work on. The integration is seamless: one app, one scene, one button that controls light level, shade position, and source selection simultaneously by room or room group.

Control4 also integrates with Lutron, but the depth of that integration, including the elegance of the unified experience, is stronger in Savant’s ecosystem.

Reliability and remote management

Both platforms are stable when properly installed. The variable isn’t the platform…it’s the installer.

That said, Savant’s remote management tools are excellent, and they’re built into our service model. When something behaves unexpectedly in a client’s home, we can see it, diagnose it, and often resolve it without a truck roll. For clients who spend time between properties, that matters.

Scalability

Savant scales cleanly to large, complex estates, such as homes with multiple buildings, guest houses, staff quarters, and outdoor zones that each need independent control but unified management. We’ve built systems in Hope Ranch and Montecito with dozens of zones, hundreds of devices, and years of reliable operation.

Control4 scales well too. This is not a meaningful differentiator for most projects.

Cost

Savant systems cost more than Control4 systems of comparable scope. The gap varies by project, but it’s real. Some of that gap is labor, since Savant programming requires a higher level of expertise, but some of it is hardware and licensing fees.

For a 5,000-square-foot estate in Montecito, the difference might be $10K+ over the total project cost. Whether that’s meaningful depends on the budget, but it’s worth surfacing.

If budget is the primary constraint, Control4 can deliver a strong system at a lower price point. If the home’s finish level demands the best available platform, Savant is worth the difference.

What about Crestron, Josh.ai, and Lutron?

Crestron is the platform of choice for commercial applications and very large residential estates where custom programming is required at every level. It’s more capable than either Savant or Control4, and more expensive, and it requires deep technical expertise to operate and maintain. For most residential clients, Crestron is more system than the use case demands. We do occasionally spec systems with Crestron Home, but Savant is still our preference.

Josh.ai is a voice control layer, not a standalone automation platform. It works on top of Savant or Control4 and adds a privacy-focused, locally-processed voice interface. We occasionally add Josh.ai to Savant installations for clients who want voice control without routing commands through cloud servers like Siri and Alexa, but have not found voice control to be a frequent request from our clients.

Lutron controls lighting and shading. It is not a whole-home automation platform, but we believe it’s the best in the world at what it does, and it integrates with Savant as described above. We specify Lutron Homeworks for virtually every project we do in Santa Barbara County.

Why this matters here specifically

Santa Barbara County and neighboring Ojai is a particular market. The homes in Montecito, Hope Ranch, and the Santa Ynez Valley were custom built at the most demanding levels, and they’re owned by people who expect the same from every system in them.

We’ve been doing this work here since 2009. We’ve seen what happens when the wrong platform gets installed in the wrong home: systems that work on paper and frustrate everyone who uses them, equipment that ages poorly in a house that doesn’t, integrators who aren’t here when something needs attention.

The right platform, installed by the right team, should disappear. You should stop thinking about it in short order. That’s the benchmark we hold ourselves to, and it’s why we chose Savant for our clients and our reputation.

Frequently asked questions

Can I switch from Control4 to Savant? Yes. Migration projects require replacing the control processor and reprogramming the system, but most third-party devices, such as lighting, shades, cameras, and audio equipment remain in place. The scope and cost depend on the existing installation. We assess this during a complimentary consultation.

Does Savant work with Amazon Alexa, Siri, or Google Home? Yes. Savant integrates with all three.

What if my Savant installer goes out of business? Any Savant-certified dealer can take over service on an existing system. The programming is stored on the processor and, for systems installed since approximately 2020, is backed up to Savant’s cloud. This is one of the reasons we document every system we install with complete technical records.

How long does a Savant system last? A properly installed Savant system, with regular software updates, has a realistic service life of 7-10 years before core components require replacement. The underlying infrastructure, including wiring, network, speakers, shades, typically outlasts the control layer. We design for longevity, not for an upgrade cycle.

Is Savant available without a dealer? No. Savant does not sell direct to consumers or to non-certified installers. If someone is offering you a Savant system outside of an authorized dealer relationship, ask questions.

Does Central Coast AV work with Control4? We have worked with Control4 on projects where it was the right fit. We do not actively sell or install it today. Our recommendation and our expertise is in Savant and Lutron.

Does Central Coast AV work with Crestron Home? Similar to Control4, we have specified Crestron Home on projects where it was the right fit. Our primary recommendation remains Savant and Lutron at this time.

The bottom line

If you’re building or renovating a luxury home in Santa Barbara County and you want a system that performs at the level of every other decision you’re making about the property, we believe Savant is the answer.

If budget is a meaningful constraint and the home’s scope is more modest, Control4, installed by a skilled integrator, will serve you well.

The platform matters. The installer matters more.
