What AV Contractors Wish Clients Asked Before the Walls Closed

Most AV contractor problems in new construction aren’t technology problems. They’re timing problems.

By the time a homeowner starts thinking about speakers, screens, lighting control, or a whole-home network, the walls are often already closed. At that point, what could have been a clean, integrated system becomes a workaround — surface-mounted conduit, Wi-Fi dead zones, visible wire runs, and equipment stuffed into whatever closet is left.

The questions below aren’t complicated. But they’re almost never asked at the right time. If you’re building a custom home, renovating an estate, or working with a contractor on a significant project, these are the conversations worth having before framing is done.

1. Where will the equipment live?

Every whole-home AV and technology system needs a home base — a dedicated rack room, media closet, or at minimum a structured wiring enclosure. This space houses your network switches, amplifiers, media distribution hardware, and low-voltage terminations.

The location matters more than most people realize. It should be:

  • Centrally located to minimize wire runs
  • Climate-controlled or at least ventilated (equipment generates heat)
  • Large enough to allow future expansion
  • Accessible without disrupting living spaces

If this decision gets made after framing, you’re often left with whatever space is available rather than whatever space makes sense.

What to ask your contractor: “Where are we designating the low-voltage equipment space, and is it on the plan yet?”

2. Are conduit runs in the plan?

Conduit — empty pipe run through walls, ceilings, and floors — is one of the most cost-effective investments in a new build. It costs relatively little during construction and gives you the ability to pull new wire at any point in the future without opening walls.

Key locations to consider:

  • From the equipment room to each television location
  • From the equipment room to exterior walls for outdoor speakers and cameras
  • Between floors for whole-home audio zones
  • From the utility room to the equipment room for internet and utility feeds
  • To the primary outdoor entertaining areas

Technology changes. The home you’re building today will likely need different infrastructure in ten years. Conduit is the insurance policy.

What to ask your contractor: “Can we add empty conduit runs to the technology locations before we frame out?”

3. Do the electrical plans reflect the technology load?

Home automation, whole-home audio, large display systems, and motorized shading all require dedicated circuits. Running high-draw equipment on shared circuits causes interference, tripped breakers, and performance issues that are difficult to diagnose after the fact.

Work with your AV and electrical teams together — not sequentially — so the panel is sized correctly and dedicated circuits are placed where the equipment will actually live.

Specific items that benefit from dedicated circuits:

  • AV rack and media equipment
  • Motorized shading systems
  • Outdoor AV and landscape lighting control
  • EV charging (if not already planned)
  • Server or IT closet

What to ask your contractor: “Has the electrician been coordinated with the AV team on circuit placement?”

4. Where are the access points going?

Wi-Fi dead zones are the most common complaint in newly built homes, and they’re almost entirely preventable. A whole-home wireless network requires access points—not consumer routers, but commercial-grade hardware mounted in the ceiling or wall—placed strategically throughout the home.

For access points to be installed cleanly and effectively, they need:

  • A home run of Cat6a cable back to the equipment room for each unit
  • Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) from a managed switch
  • Ceiling or wall blocking during framing for a flush mount

An access point placed on a bookshelf or plugged into a random outlet is a compromise. It may work. It won’t work well.

What to ask your contractor: “Are access point locations and their home runs included in the low-voltage plan?”

5. What’s the plan for outdoor spaces?

If AV is often an afterthought, Outdoor AV is often not even considered until after the exterior is complete. At that point, wire runs are either buried expensively or surface-mounted visibly. Neither is ideal.

Before exterior work begins, consider:

  • Landscape speaker locations and wire paths
  • Television or outdoor display locations (and whether power and signal are planned to those spots)
  • Security camera coverage and conduit to each location
  • Gate and entry system integration
  • Landscape lighting control zones

Outdoor spaces have become a priority for most homeowners at this level. They deserve the same pre-planning as any interior room.

What to ask your contractor: “Are the outdoor technology locations stubbed out in the electrical and low-voltage plans?”

The Larger Point

A well-integrated home technology system doesn’t begin with equipment selection. It begins with infrastructure planning — and that planning has to happen in parallel with the rest of the build, not after it.

The contractors who produce the best outcomes for their clients bring their AV and technology partner in at the design phase, not at move-in. It costs the same to run wire correctly the first time. It costs significantly more to fix it later.
