Wired vs. Wireless: Why Hardwired Still Wins

Wi-Fi got good enough that most people stopped thinking about ethernet cables. That’s a mistake for anything that actually matters, whether it be a work computer, a security camera, a gaming rig, or a point-of-sale system. 

Here’s why running a cable still beats relying on radio waves, even in 2026.

Speed: The Ceiling Is Higher and More Real

Wireless speed numbers on the box are theoretical maximums under perfect lab conditions. In a real house or office, walls, distance, and other devices on the same channel cut that number down fast. A modern wired connection, on the other hand, delivers close to its rated speed consistently, because the signal isn’t fighting for airtime with every other device in the building.

Latency: The Difference You Feel

Wireless adds delay that wired connections don’t: the time to negotiate airtime, retransmit dropped packets, and process signal noise. For browsing, that delay is invisible. For video calls, competitive gaming, or remote desktop work, it’s the stutter, the lag spike, the dropped frame. Ethernet’s latency is lower and far more predictable, because there’s no shared medium to contend with.

Reliability: No Interference, No Dead Zones

Wi-Fi shares spectrum with neighbors’ networks, Bluetooth devices, microwaves, baby monitors, and even thick walls or metal studs that block signal outright. None of that touches a physical cable. A wired connection either works at full speed or it’s physically disconnected — there’s no in-between state of “technically connected but barely.” That predictability matters enormously for anything running unattended, like a security system or a server.

Security: A Smaller Attack Surface

Every wireless network broadcasts its existence to anything in range, which means anyone nearby can attempt to intercept traffic or crack into the network without ever setting foot on the property. A wired network requires physical access to a jack or a switch. That’s a fundamentally smaller and more controllable attack surface, which is exactly why data centers, financial institutions, and secure facilities still run everything over cable even after decades of wireless improvements.

Capacity: Handling Many Devices at Once

Wireless bandwidth is shared across every device connected to the same access point. Add enough laptops, phones, smart TVs, and IoT gadgets, and everyone’s speed drops…even if each device individually would be fine on its own. Wired ports don’t share bandwidth the same way; each device gets its own dedicated line back to the switch, so performance doesn’t degrade as more devices join.

Where Wireless Still Makes Sense

None of this makes Wi-Fi obsolete. Phones, tablets, laptops that move around the house, and guest access all need wireless because mobility is the point. The right answer for most homes and businesses is both: wired for anything stationary and performance-sensitive. (Think desktops, TVs, streaming boxes, cameras, printers, gaming consoles.) Wireless remains the right direction for everything that needs to move.

The Bottom Line

Wireless is convenient. Wired is dependable. When speed, latency, security, or reliability actually matter, running a cable (and conduit!) is still the right call. In our opinion, it’s a big part of why anyone designing a serious network, from a home office to a commercial building, starts with ethernet and treats Wi-Fi as the add-on, not the foundation.
